Grant Lungren

After earning a Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering from Arizona State University and then a Master’s in Business Administration , Lungren embarked on a career that would significantly influence infrastructure contracting and management consulting across North America.

Tenure at Tanner Construction

In the mid 1970s, Lungren joined Tanner Construction, a regional paving contractor based in Arizona. Over nearly a decade as President, he led the company through a period of remarkable growth. Under his leadership, Tanner transformed into the nation’s largest federal highway-bridge contractor, employing over 1,500 personnel. This expansion not only showcased Lungren’s strategic vision but also highlighted his ability to manage large-scale operations effectively.

Founding of Grantlun Corporation

In 1989, leveraging his extensive experience, Lungren founded Grantlun Corporation. The company’s initial mission was to provide infrastructure contractors with a fully integrated estimating and project management system, based on the intellectual property Lungren had developed during his tenure at Tanner. This initiative aimed to streamline construction processes, enhance accuracy in project estimations, and improve overall project management efficiency.

Transition to Hard Dollar

By 1999, Grantlun’s innovative solutions were leading the industry. Recognizing the potential for broader market reach, investors provided capital to expand the company’s offerings. This strategic move led to the rebranding of Grantlun Corporation as Hard Dollar. Under Lungren’s leadership as Chairman and CEO, Hard Dollar became North America’s leading provider of integrated cost estimating and project management software systems for infrastructure construction contractors. The company’s solutions were utilized to bid and manage hundreds of billions of dollars worth of projects annually, encompassing sectors such as transportation, water and sewer, heavy civil, environmental remediation, power, and industrial projects.

Re-launching Grantlun Corporation

In 2002, after architecting the functionality of Hard Dollar’s next-generation system, Lungren retired from his roles at Hard Dollar. He then re-launched Grantlun Corporation with a renewed mission: to provide executive management consulting services to infrastructure contractors across North America. This phase of his career focused on offering strategic business planning, operations software, equipment charge rate development, cost breakdown structure development, operations tune-ups, documentation, board memberships, and training. Operating from its headquarters in Bozeman, Montana, Grantlun Corporation continues to leverage Lungren’s extensive industry expertise to assist contractors in achieving peak performance.

Establishment of Ironworks LLC

In 2015, expanding upon his commitment to innovation in the construction industry, Lungren co-founded Ironworks LLC as a subsidiary of Grantlun Corporation. This venture represents the synthesis of decades of construction industry expertise with cutting-edge AI technology, aiming to revolutionize equipment management-related consulting services. Ironworks owns the intellectual property associated with Grantlun’s equipment management consulting services, including a copyright to an innovative heavy equipment cost breakdown structure, further solidifying Lungren’s legacy of integrating technology with construction management.

Industry Contributions and Recognition

Throughout his career, Lungren has been an active contributor to the construction industry. His service record includes membership in the American Council for Construction Education, co-chairman of the Arizona Governor’s Committee on Highway Construction, and a founding role in the Arizona State University Construction Advisory Council. He has also served as an officer and a director of the Associated General Contractors, Arizona Heavy-Highway Chapter. These roles underscore his dedication to advancing industry standards and education.

In summary, Grant Lungren’s career reflects a profound impact on the construction industry through strategic leadership, innovative technology integration, and a commitment to excellence in project management and consulting services.
